The Most Famous Car Crashes of All Times

Despite all of the vehicle safety standards, traffic rules, and public awareness, auto accidents are still tremendously high. Every year, thousands of people lose their lives and sustain terrible injuries during automobile accidents. Those that are lucky enough to survive a car accident mostly end up emotionally or physically scarred for life.

Vehicle accidents affect us all and even infamous celebrities are not resilient against the dangers of our busy roads. Over the years many famous people have been in horrible and often fatal car accidents. Here are a few of the most famous car crashes of all time.

Princess Diana

The Princess of Wales is probably and will probably always be the most famous car crash of all time. On August 31, 1997, Princess Diana was traveling in Paris in France. She was only 36 years old when her driver collided with a tunnel pillar which resulted in multiple fatalities. It was first thought that the driver was speeding to outrun paparazzi but autopsies later revealed that the driver, Henri Paul, was under the influence of alcohol and was also using antidepressants as well as antipsychotics all of which could have affected his judgment and driving capabilities. Princess Diana was barely conscious when police arrived on the scene and the final words she uttered were “leave me alone,” most likely directed towards paparazzi that constantly followed her around.

James Dean

The infamous actor James Dean was killed in an automotive accident on 30 September 1955 at the young age of just 24 years old. James Dean was pulled over for speeding only two hours before his fatal collision yet continued his competitive road racing on his way to a competition in Salinas in California. His excessive speed is exactly what resulted in a T-bone collision with a Ford sedan that ended his life just before the launch of his latest film.

Paul Walker

Paul Walker is mourned by co-actor Vin Diesel to this very day. He was best known for his role in Fast and the Furious franchise. While filming the seventh sequel of this movie, Paul was killed in his Porsche with his and another body burned beyond recognition. After further investigation, it was found that neither vehicle failures nor intoxication was to blame for the accident. Walker was simply driving too fast and died at the age of 40 years on November 30, 2013.

Cliff Burton

Cliff Burton was considered the top trash-metal bassist in the world but sadly died at the young age of 24 years. He was a bassist for Metallica and they were touring overseas when the tour bus driver lost control over the vehicle. Burton was asleep in a converted top bunk that he won in a card draw and was flung through a side window before the bus toppled over him and crushed his body on 27 September 1986. No evidence was found that the driver was under the influence nor that he fell asleep at the wheel.

Grace Kelly

Grace Kelly, the Princess of Monaco died in 1982 while driving down a mountainside along with her 25-year-old daughter Stephanie. Grace Kelly apparently suffered from a stroke when she drove down the mountainside that ended in her death and in terrible injuries to her daughter. Grace Kelly was known as one of the most beautiful starlets of the fifties before retiring from acting at the age of 26 to marry Rainier and become a Princess.

While all car crashes are not nearly as famous as these accidents and probably won’t be remembered as long, it is still a very serious turn of events and can leave some pretty big scars on those involved.
